Just in Case You Were Home Sick Today

There have been a few people out sick in the class, so here is a video showing the distributive property of multiplication with a suggested question at the end.  Feel free to make up some more questions to practice if you are not completely comfortable with the process the first time.  This process also shows the importance of knowing your multiplication facts.

Have fun!

Poem

A Poem By Jean

Books can be red, or yellow, or blue,
And take you to places you never knew.
When I’m reading my book, I can fly,
Down by the land or up in the sky.

Books can come in any shape or size,
A small little envelope or a great big surprise!
You can read by yourself or someone to you,
You’ll have great fun, whatever you do.

Past, present, or future, you can decide,
Riding on words is a very special ride.
Read a little, and you will see,
You can be just as happy as me!

Stories about knights in armor,
Or about a very famous snake charmer.
These kinds of stories make me feel saved,
Because these are the kind of books I crave.

Sometimes, though, reading isn’t as happy,
When the characters can be sad or snappy.
These kinds of stories make me cry,
In other words, bring a tear to my eye.

When I’m in a book I can be anyone at all,
Pretend I’m in a plane or at a ball.
Reading is as good as life can be,
It gives me the strength to just be me!

Our New Outdoor Classroom!

On Oct.25, we had the grand opening of our Outdoor Classroom. Our school won this classroom in a contest by Majesta. It was a contest where you went on a website, signed in and voted every day for whichever school you wanted to win the classroom. We were really excited to see the finished structure, so we'll tell you about the ceremony!

Friday was the day of the Outdoor Classroom opening. Everybody was chattering with excitement! Mr. Blucher, the principal, tapped his microphone to get us to stop talking so people could do their speeches. He said "Good morning" and introduced the company workers, the ones that would be doing the speeches. In one of the speeches, they introduced the mascot! He was a tree. I remember his name. It was Red Spruce!

They talked about how we were the 4th school to get the Outdoor Classroom.

We had to wait until the end of the day (almost) for our turn at the stations, but it was worth it the stations were out of this world a.k.a awesome! The first station our group got was to make fake fossils, but they looked real. The second station was building bird houses, but nobody really got theirs done. The third and final station was making a family tree. On your paper, there were some boxes in a tree that you could draw your family in.

Our favorite station was the fake fossils because you got to look at different sea shells and choose which style you wanted your fossil to be. It was really cool! When it dry's its like a real rock fossil! I didn't believe it! it was unbelievable it looked like a real fossil! well You can see that they look real the pic is right there.

Can't what for you to see the outdoor classroom!!!!!!
That's what we did at the grand opening I hope you likes our recount thanks!

The Outdoor Classroom Opening!

On a sunny day, Friday the 25th, 2013 in the morning, Island View's School's outdoor classroom opened and everyone was cheerful and happy! We trotted happily to the outdoor classroom, and sat down beside our friends with smiles on their faces! The outdoor classroom money came from and the people who made up the idea for the outdoor classroom was.... Majesta!

We listened to the speaker's one by one all happy and exited for the opening it was happening so quickly! They all did a wonderful speach to us! We had to wait until after luch for our turn.

After lunch we had gym right after lunch recess. Our teacher with a smile on her face put us into groups and told us what station we were going in. We were all exited to go to the outdoor classroom on a so beautiful day!

We sat down at the tables and we did a family tree at our first station. That one was really fun! For the family tree you put your pets and your family members. It was really fun!

Our group took a seat at the second station.  For our second station we did how you know your family members name you have to know your trees names as well too! It is really important to know your trees names all around you. That one was really exiting to learn about!

Then we went to our third station our last sation! We sat down and made a colorful tree with paint on our hand, the colors to pick from were green, blue, yellow and red I picked yellow. the whole school who went to this station has all the hand on the tree.

We had a wonderful time with the outdoor classroom opening day! It was really fun!

What Do Archeology Students do in 2013?

In this video from Oregon State University, we get a glimpse of what their first day "on the job" would look like. The university digs a hole in the fall and places items in the ground to be covered up for the students to find. Then after the items ore covered up, they place sand bags over the earth so it can compact over the winter. What we see in this video is when the students pull the sand bags out and set up a dig site.

After watching the video, you might have some questions or you might be insprired to go digging.  Before you do, you should check out these FAQ on the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture.

Team 4 Carr

Welcome to grade 4, or as we like to call it, "Team 4 Carr."  On one of our walls, we have portraits that were drawn by all the students that are in our class.  Beside these pictures, you will also find the title "Team 4 Carr."  Some of the things we have done this year so far include:

learn about our 5 class pets (4 fish and 1 gecko)
Made a blog post about the gecko's new home (see below)
We have our own laptops in the class and some of us started using them today
We were assigned class jobs (some of us don't have one yet)
We also have tables that have white-board sufaces so we can use dry erase markers on them.

These are just a few of the things we have done so far, and we are looking forward to new and exciting things in the future.

Have a good day!

Baby Fairy Wrens Have to Sing for Their Supper?

These two Superb Fairy-Wrens were spotted in Ensay,
 Victoria, Australia. Image: benjamint444
If you haven’t already heard or read, the Baby Fairy Wren article, then I’m here to give you a little intro.   In order for a Baby Fairy Wren to get its supper it has to sing.  The Baby Wren will sing a perfect note, that they learn in their egg, this note is called the begging call. But if the Baby Wren does not sing the right note, it may either not get fed, or not get fed as often. This call is perfected to make sure if another egg gets into the nest, it will not be fed.

Maybe Lonesome George Wasn't so Lonely

Lonesome George. Image: putneymark
Did you see the article about lonesome George?  George died last summer ( June 2012) at that time scientists thought that Lonesome George was the last of his kind, and since he died the species Chelonoidis abingdoni, had gone extincted. But they had been mistaken, on Isabelle island 60 km away from Georges home more of his species were found, as their DNA was studied.

Art Class - Drawing a Cartoon Boy

Using this video of how to draw a cartoon of a boy as your guide, create a character using pencil at first and then colour pencil at the end. Remember to press lightly at first until you see the lines you want to make darker, and you can change the mouth, nose and eyes to personalize your character. When you are adding colour, try to darken some areas for shadow, and lighten other areas for highlights. Although this is a computer program this artist is using, it gives a clear and concise lesson for completing this task.  Maybe another day we can try this on the computers.  When you are finished, you can go back with a black marker over the lines and it will give it more of a cartoon effect.

Have Fun!  I wish I was feeling better to be in class and do this with you, I know you will all do great.

Persuasive Writing

The students will be starting a persuasive piece of writing today.  The class will have to write a little essay to a groundhod in an effort to persuade it to either come out early or sleep a little longer.  Here is an example of a persuasive essay.  The only difference with our assignment is that we will be writing a 5 paragraph essay.
