Our New Outdoor Classroom!

On Oct.25, we had the grand opening of our Outdoor Classroom. Our school won this classroom in a contest by Majesta. It was a contest where you went on a website, signed in and voted every day for whichever school you wanted to win the classroom. We were really excited to see the finished structure, so we'll tell you about the ceremony!

Friday was the day of the Outdoor Classroom opening. Everybody was chattering with excitement! Mr. Blucher, the principal, tapped his microphone to get us to stop talking so people could do their speeches. He said "Good morning" and introduced the company workers, the ones that would be doing the speeches. In one of the speeches, they introduced the mascot! He was a tree. I remember his name. It was Red Spruce!

They talked about how we were the 4th school to get the Outdoor Classroom.

We had to wait until the end of the day (almost) for our turn at the stations, but it was worth it the stations were out of this world a.k.a awesome! The first station our group got was to make fake fossils, but they looked real. The second station was building bird houses, but nobody really got theirs done. The third and final station was making a family tree. On your paper, there were some boxes in a tree that you could draw your family in.

Our favorite station was the fake fossils because you got to look at different sea shells and choose which style you wanted your fossil to be. It was really cool! When it dry's its like a real rock fossil! I didn't believe it! it was unbelievable it looked like a real fossil! well You can see that they look real the pic is right there.

Can't what for you to see the outdoor classroom!!!!!!
That's what we did at the grand opening I hope you likes our recount thanks!

The Outdoor Classroom Opening!

On a sunny day, Friday the 25th, 2013 in the morning, Island View's School's outdoor classroom opened and everyone was cheerful and happy! We trotted happily to the outdoor classroom, and sat down beside our friends with smiles on their faces! The outdoor classroom money came from and the people who made up the idea for the outdoor classroom was.... Majesta!

We listened to the speaker's one by one all happy and exited for the opening it was happening so quickly! They all did a wonderful speach to us! We had to wait until after luch for our turn.

After lunch we had gym right after lunch recess. Our teacher with a smile on her face put us into groups and told us what station we were going in. We were all exited to go to the outdoor classroom on a so beautiful day!

We sat down at the tables and we did a family tree at our first station. That one was really fun! For the family tree you put your pets and your family members. It was really fun!

Our group took a seat at the second station.  For our second station we did how you know your family members name you have to know your trees names as well too! It is really important to know your trees names all around you. That one was really exiting to learn about!

Then we went to our third station our last sation! We sat down and made a colorful tree with paint on our hand, the colors to pick from were green, blue, yellow and red I picked yellow. the whole school who went to this station has all the hand on the tree.

We had a wonderful time with the outdoor classroom opening day! It was really fun!

Acheological Finds

In this video, archeologists discuss their findings.  It is interesting to hear the students talk about the rocks and the clues they use to determine the importance of the stone.

What Do Archeology Students do in 2013?

In this video from Oregon State University, we get a glimpse of what their first day "on the job" would look like. The university digs a hole in the fall and places items in the ground to be covered up for the students to find. Then after the items ore covered up, they place sand bags over the earth so it can compact over the winter. What we see in this video is when the students pull the sand bags out and set up a dig site.

After watching the video, you might have some questions or you might be insprired to go digging.  Before you do, you should check out these FAQ on the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture.

Bird's Eye View

Last year, our class built birdhouses and put them up in various places around the school.  Here is what the inside of the house looks like after chickadees have nested in them.
